About Sanibel Island

Sanibel Island Ranked #1 on Frommer's Top 10 Favorite Places to Travel

The founder of Frommer's Travel Guides, Andrew Frommer, has selected Sanibel Island #1 as his "favorite place in the world to travel," describing Sanibel as, "Off the west coast of the Sunshine State, a few miles from Ft. Myers, is this idyllic haven of white-sand beaches, condos whose seafront apartments are available for weekly rentals, excellent restaurants, good shopping and most important, the Ding Darling Nature Preserve, visited by thousands of birds of every species, who bask in the sun after diving for fish, and are one of the great natural sights of wildlife in America." Frommer groups Sanibel above his other personal favorite places in the world to visit, including Bali, Indonesia; Paris; St John, U.S. Virgin Islands; Cairo; Caribbean Island Bonaire; Yachats, Oregon; Chiang Rai, Thailand; Greenwich Village; and Kenya. We'd say Sanibel Island is in pretty good company!

Shelling on the world-renowned beaches of Sanibel Island is a favorite pastime for locals and vacationers alike. The Sanibel and Captiva beaches have been ranked over and over as the best in the U.S. and possibly the world!  If shelling is not your forte, there are more than 27 miles of bike paths on Sanibel Island. Our bike paths can lead you to unique boutiques and restaurants along Periwinkle Way, or visitors can experience the island’s nature and simply take in the beautiful sites. Visitors can rent bikes from several local companies, either for the day or for the week, and enjoy biking down to the historic lighthouse, have a nice picnic on the beach, and then bike back to your Sanibel vacation rental. But don't forget to stop for homemade ice cream along the way at Pinocchio's Ice Cream Parlor for a very tasty treat that will refresh your palate.24

A Sanibel Island condo is also the perfect vacation experience for the nature lover. With more than 70% of the island protected by the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge and the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, many unusual birds such as the roseate spoonbill and the white ibis make Sanibel Island their home. J.N. Ding Darling is navigable by land or sea and open daily except for Fridays (that’s the only day off each week that the birds get). Kayak through the pristine waters surrounding Sanibel to view sea creatures such as the manatee and the dolphins that frolic freely in their natural habitat.

There are several companies offering tours on the island. Try your hand on a Segway from Billy’s Bike Rentals. Boating tours vary from the Sanibel Thriller “cigar boat,” to a pontoon tour of Tarpon Bay. The more adventurous can rent a boat and discover the beauty of San Carlos Bay! Or have a guide take you to one of the out-islands that are only accessible by boat. Fewer people means more shells for you!

When it comes to Sanibel restaurants, the area has some great choices. Start your day with breakfast at the famous Lighthouse Café or The Over Easy Café - great food at both! Try lunch at The Island Cow and maybe you’ll want to take home some “moo” wear. Cip’s Place also offers great food and a huge mural of famous Sanibel residents. The evening brings options from fine dining overlooking the Gulf of Mexico at either Mad Hatter or Thistle Lodge to a local neighborhood sports pub like the Lazy Flamingo or The Sanibel Grill. And of course, the freshest seafood is an option just about everywhere.  When it comes to food, Sanibel has something for everyone at any time of day!

Everything you could want from a Florida beach vacation is waiting for you on Sanibel and Captiva Islands. From basking in the summer sun to exciting wildlife excursions, our Sanibel vacation rentals are the perfect destination for all… families, couples, and even groups. Take a break from the tiresome, cold winters of the north or the long hot days of the summer and experience the ultimate island getaway with Sanibel and Captiva Accommodations, your Sanibel Island rental experts.
